Governor Biographies

Mr Jonathan Layzell (Chair)

Jonathan is the Chair of Governors for Bishop Sutton and Stanton Drew Primary Schools.  He grew up in north-east Somerset and studied History at Bristol and Exeter Universities before pursuing a career in housing.  Jonathan is now director of a large housing association, responsible for building new affordable homes across England.  Away from work he was a Parish Councillor for around 10 years and has been a school governor for 8 years and Chair since 2016.  Jonathan lives in nearby Hinton Blewett with his wife Kathryn and two children - who attend Bishop Sutton and Chew Valley schools.  In his spare time he enjoys spending time at the beach with the family, as well as cycling and swimming, and annually plodding around the Chew Valley 10k course.

Mrs Diane Dimmock

Diane has been a governor for approximately 18 years and has recently changed from staff governor to community governor. She is a member of the Premises committee. Most of you will know Diane very well as our welcoming ‘front of house’ School Business Manager.

Mrs Julie Hughes

Julie has been a governor at Bishop Sutton and Stanton Drew Primary Schools for the past nine years. She lives in Chew Stoke with her husband and has three teenage children who were at Bishop Sutton Primary School and are now at Chew Valley School.  Julie’s background is in science having worked at Bristol Dental School and she sits on the Education and SIC committee as well as being the science link governor.

Mrs Penny Cross

Penny has been a Governor for Stanton Drew Primary for the past 5 years, having previously been a TA at the school for 12 years and a volunteer before that. My previous working life was in Financial Services but education was always a passion and remains so. I am also very interested in history, art, theatre and gardening. Currently Penny sits on the Finance and Personnel Committee, having also spent several years with the Education and School Improvement Committee. Penny is very involved in as many school and after school activities as time will allow her and very much enjoys being part of the Federation team.

Mr Simon Waller

Simon is married to Alison, and they have two children (George and Charlotte) who attend BSPS. Simon lives in Stanton Drew, loves the area and is very happy here. Simon works as a global consultant for a large American analytics software company called SAS and describes himself as positive, friendly and competent. He is very excited to be a governor for the Federation of Bishop Sutton and Stanton Drew Schools and aims to be able to make a positive contribution to both schools and play an active role in helping them to go from strength to strength.

Mr Phil Cocks

My name is Phil Cocks - I am delighted to be a new governor for Bishop Sutton and Stanton Drew Primary schools. I moved into Bishop Sutton in October 2015 with my wife Victoria and daughter Florence, who will hopefully be starting Bishop Sutton primary school in September 2018. My background lies within education. I am currently Deputy Head at a secondary Academy in south Bristol. I am responsible for academic outcomes, teaching and learning and the curriculum. My Academy is also part of one of the largest multi Academy Trust in the country so I have some limited experience of working with our primary partners. Alongside my wider duties I teach Maths and PE at both Key Stage 3 and 4. Outside of education I am very keen to fully immerse myself in village life. My family has really enjoyed living in Bishop Sutton and supporting all the local events we can. I am a proud member of the village cricket club and look forward to exploring future opportunities that the area has to offer.

Dr Philip Gladwin

Philip has been a primary school Governor for six years at two separate schools.  The family moved to Stanton Drew in late 2015 where both children enjoyed the local primary school.  Philip is the safeguarding Governor and a member of the finance committee.  In his free time Philip enjoys bell ringing and keeping fit.

Mrs Kit Strickland

Kit was appointed as a school governor in 2018 and lives in Stanton Drew with her husband and two children, one of whom currently attends Stanton Drew school. By day (and night) she is a General Surgery Registrar (surgeon) specialising in the field of oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery. Her PhD funded by the Medical Research Council in optimising the design and conduct of clinical trials in surgery, was awarded in 2019. Kit says 'As surgeons, we all have a responsibility for clinical governance through regular audit of practice, quality improvement projects and research.  Schools, like hospitals, form a vital part of any community. Working with the teachers and other school governors to help maximise the potential and excellence of both our primary schools for the benefit of all children, seems a very worthwhile role, to which I hope I can contribute’.

Mr Eric Sanders

Eric has been a co-opted governor since 2019. He lives in Bishop Sutton with his wife Lisa and two children, one of whom attends Bishop Sutton Primary School. He is a Director and Company Secretary of a local NHS organisation and has a keen interest in corporate governance, risk management, information governance and regulatory compliance. Having grown up in Newcastle upon Tyne, Eric studied Chemistry at Sheffield University before moving to the South West. In his spare time he enjoys CrossFit, walking, watching Bath Rugby and coaching the local U7’s rugby team at Chew Valley.
