Wrens Curriculum Newsletter Sep 2022 is here

Meet Miss Gilmore!

Welcome to Wren class! I have enjoyed the first few days of term and have loved getting to know all of Wren class. Everyone has made a really enthusiastic start to the year and I am excited about the learning opportunities we have planned for this term.

Teaching staff:

Mrs Rogers is supporting Wren class on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. On a Wednesday afternoon Mrs Perry has the class for music and P.E. On a Thursday afternoon Mr Marriot has the group for R.E.

Reading – It is important that your child is reading every day, as a school we request that children read a minimum of 5 times a week. The children have now been given their reading diaries, due to C19 these are to be kept at home and filled in by an adult, when the child reaches milestone reads you can inform me through class dojo and I will make sure that the child receives the relevant certificate for their achievement.

Spelling: I will send home the spellings for this term. They will have spelling practice in class up to three times a week however it is important that they also practise their spellings at home.

Times Tables: Practice on Times table Rock stars would greatly improve their fluency, children should be practicing times tables at home weekly.

Learning logs: The children each have a learning log, these can be used when homework is set. The children should complete homework in their learning logs and feedback can then be given from me. This homework will not start for a few weeks to give the children the chance to settle in.

Wren class has P.E on a Wednesday afternoon, this means that every Wednesday the children need to come to school in their P.E kits. On other days, where possible, we will be incorporating other physical activities into the day, such a yoga or a variety of games.

The curriculum:

Maths – We have started the year by looking at place value. Place value will then help to refine and develop the other two units for this term, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. Any times table practice at home would be extremely beneficial to improve their fluency.

English: In English we are currently focussing on ‘Here we are’ by Oliver Jeffers. After this we will be moving onto writing a setting description and narrative piece of writing, based upon the book ‘Leon and the place between’.

Science – In science this term we are looking at animals including humans, exploring the human skeleton, muscles and nutrition. After October half term we will be moving onto light, focussing on shadows, reflection and protecting the eyes.

History – This term we are studying the Stone Age, looking at changes from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. This topic allows children to understand what pre- historic life was like. The children will also have the opportunity to explore the Bronze Age and the Ice Age.

Art – This term we will be focussing on colour and pattern, exploring colour and emotion and looking at famous artist Henry Matisse. During this term, linked to our history topic, we will also be exploring and creating our own cave paintings.

R.E – In R.E the children are currently exploring the question: What do Christians believe about God and incarnation?

French - Our first French unit this term will be: I’m learning French (J’apprends le Français). After half term we will then move on to Animals (Les Animaux).

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask, you can contact the office and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Alternatively, you can message me through class dojo.

Thank you,

Miss Laura Gilmour
